Dr. Paul George

Dr. Paul S. George is a Professor of History, Miami-Dade College, Wolfson Campus.  He also serves as Historian to HistoryMiami. A native Miamian, Paul George is a graduate of Miami Dade Community College and the University of Miami.

He holds a Masters and Ph.D. degree in History from the Florida State University.  Dr. George has taught in several universities and colleges, including Florida State University, Florida A & M University, Florida Atlantic University, and the University of Miami.

Paul has authored fifteen books, nearly two hundred articles, book reviews, columns, and numerous unpublished manuscripts.  Two of the books have won awards. He has served as editor of three books.

Paul is a past-president of the Florida Historical Society, vice chairman of the City of Miami’s Heritage Conservation Board, and director of the Historic Broward County Preservation Board, and sits as a member of Metro Dade County’s Preservation Board.  He is also past-president of the Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archive.

Paul is editor of both Tequesta, the scholarly journal of the Historical Association of Southern Florida, and the same organization’s HM Magazine. Since 2011, he has written a monthly historic photo essay column for Biscayne Times.

Paul’s long and distinguished career as a historian includes the following honors:

  • Twice been cited as Miami’s outstanding Historian by Miami New Times.
  • Featured as a Newsmaker in December 1991 by Miami Today.
  • Honored by Miami Women’s Club with its first Historian of the Year award in 2008.
  • Branded by Miami New Times as “Mr. Miami History” in 2011.
  • Cited by Miami Today as a “Thought Leader” in its “Best of Miami” feature in 2015.
  • Recognized as Teacher of the Year for Miami-Dade Community College, Wolfson and Inter-American campuses in 1995
  • Held the Arthur Hertz Endowed Chair at Miami-Dade College between 1997 and 2000.
  • Presented the Excellence in Teaching Award for Social Science by Miami-Dade College in 2011.
  • Honored as teacher of the year by Wolfson’s National Society of Leadership and Success for the academic year of 2012-2013.
  • Inducted into the Archbishop Curley/Notre Dame High School Hall of Fame.

In addition to his written work, Paul has also been featured in many documentaries and both local and national news stories pertaining to Miami’s history. He was the narrator and a principal in a historical documentary on the Miami News/Freedom Tower created by WLRN Television. The documentary was selected as the top film in its category by the Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives in 2004.

Paul has curated several historical exhibits at the Historical Association of Southern Florida and at the Jewish Museum of Florida. He has been consulted and contributed to many more exhibits and cultural events including his free tours of Little Havana during the monthly Cultural Friday event.

Finally, Dr. Paul George is also very well known for his very extensive tour schedule. He conducts about thirty-five different history tours of Dade, Broward, and Monroe Counties. He provides a combination of walking, bus and boat tours that provide tour goers the experience of reliving Miami’s rich history.
